The commencement of trade between Pakistan and Israel has been confirmed by the American Jewish Congress. The first shipment of Pakistani food products, facilitated by Pakistani-Jewish businessman Fishel Benkhald, was received in Israel by three Israeli businessmen. Benkhald is an important player in Pakistan’s small but growing kosher food industry, which exports halal and kosher food to various destinations worldwide. The story has been widely reported in Pakistani and international media, with Benkhald even sharing a video clip of Pakistani food products on display in a Jerusalem market, garnering over half a million views.
The development occurred in conjunction with the UAE’s decision to reduce or eliminate tariffs on nearly all goods traded with Israel. Trade exhibits organized by the UAE assisted in the deal between Pakistani and Israeli businessmen, enabling the shipment from Pakistan to Israel.
The American Jewish Congress welcomes the recent development in Israeli-Pakistani trade and sees it as a positive step for both economies and the region. The organization notes that it has previously played a role in breaking down trade barriers between the two countries through public diplomacy initiatives in 2005, led by President Jack Rosen and in partnership with the American Council for World Jewry. The initiatives resulted in the abolishment of constraints and licenses that had previously restricted Israel-Pakistan trade, and the removal of import licenses for goods from Pakistan by Israel.
Late Congressman Tom Lantos, then Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, recognized the effort in the Congressional Record, including the speech by then President of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf, that acknowledged Mr. Rosen’s initiative as “an endeavor for mutual understanding in a time of uncertainty and fear.” The American Jewish Congress remains committed to working with the U.S. Government, leaders of Israel and Pakistan, and partners in the Middle East to foster a prosperous future for all.
The recent commencement of trade between Pakistan and Israel has the potential to be mutually beneficial for both countries. The trade can promote economic growth and job opportunities, especially in sectors such as agriculture and technology. Furthermore, it can serve as a catalyst for reducing political tensions between the two nations. Improved trade relations can lead to greater understanding and cooperation, which may help to build trust and facilitate dialogue between the countries.
Moreover, the development of trade ties between Pakistan and Israel could have a positive impact on reducing extremism and promoting peace in the region. Both countries have faced challenges related to religious conflict and political instability in the past. However, increased economic cooperation and cultural exchange could contribute to breaking down barriers and fostering understanding between different communities. While Pakistan has yet to officially recognize the state of Israel, this new trade initiative may be an important step towards building stronger ties between the two countries.
