GPT Store by OpenAI Redefines Chatbot Creation
In a triumphant return to the forefront of artificial intelligence (AI) innovation, OpenAI unveiled two groundbreaking products on Wednesday, GPT Store and ChatGPT Team, marking its resurgence after a period of leadership tumult. The GPT Store, dubbed as OpenAI’s counterpart to the App Store, allows users to showcase and share personalized chatbots, known as GPTs, they’ve crafted for others to seamlessly download. Simultaneously, the company introduced ChatGPT Team, a novel option tailored for businesses.
The GPT Store by OpenAI emerges as a strategic move to build upon the consumer success of ChatGPT, which captured the world’s imagination last year with its generative AI capabilities, impressing users with its ability to produce human-like prose and poetry. Although ChatGPT experienced rapid growth, its momentum dwindled during school breaks, and the initial novelty of the chatbot wore off.
Embedded within the popular ChatGPT chatbot, the GPT Store by OpenAI provides users with a platform to explore and construct GPTs tailored for various tasks, such as teaching mathematics or designing stickers. OpenAI’s November announcement of the GPT Builder program resulted in over 3 million user-created GPTs. The company plans to feature noteworthy GPTs weekly, fostering a vibrant community within the store.
Users navigating the GPT Store will find a community leaderboard showcasing popular downloads. The store is organized by categories such as writing, lifestyle, and education, facilitating easy discovery of GPTs aligned with specific preferences. OpenAI further disclosed plans for a revenue-sharing program with GPT creators, slated to commence in the first quarter of the year. While the specifics of the compensation model remain undisclosed, creators will be remunerated based on user engagement with their chatbots.
Initially slated for a November launch, the GPT Store experienced delays, with the opening pushed to December and ultimately to January. OpenAI introduced a new review system to uphold brand guidelines and usage policies, aiming to ensure the quality and safety of custom GPTs. Additionally, the company updated the process for reporting harmful or unsafe GPTs.
The GPT Store by OpenAI will be accessible to users of ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise, as well as subscribers to a new tier known as Team. The revenue-sharing program for GPT builders will be introduced in the near future, compensating U.S. builders based on user engagement metrics.
ChatGPT Team, designed for businesses with fewer than 150 users, offers a shared workspace and the ability for teams to develop their own GPTs. Priced at $25 per user per month (annual payment) or $30 per user per month (monthly payment), this new tier follows the successful launch of ChatGPT Enterprise in August. The latter, after less than a year of development, provides users with unlimited access to GPT-4, performance improvements, and API credits.
OpenAI’s Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, had previously stated that Enterprise pricing would not be publicly disclosed, emphasizing its dependence on individual company use cases and sizes. CEO Sam Altman, speaking at OpenAI’s first in-person event in November, highlighted the company’s commitment to selling intelligence and intelligent agents, hinting at future trends in the industry. With these latest launches, OpenAI positions itself at the forefront of the AI landscape, ready to redefine the boundaries of innovation and intelligence.
